Air Fest Makes World’s Largest QR Code®

Posted onFebruary 28, 2012

Air Fest , a company specializing in the management of day camps has succeeded on Saturday, February 18, 2012, in creating the largest code QR in the world ! The challenge  wais the beginning of the registration drive for 2012 theme “ One was larger than life ! “day camps.  More info here or scan the world’s largest QR Code.

They have now beaten Hackerspace Charlotte, an artistic collective focused on digital media, and Skanz, a social networking platform specializing in QR codes, that both succeeded in building massive codes in 2011.

Air Fest’s code measures a mammoth 15,625 square feet, beating out both codes from Skanz and Hackerspace by at least 5,000 feet. The code resolves to a mobile website where smart phone users can find information on the code and its construction. They will also find details about the company and why it chose to make the world’s largest QR code. The code can only be scanned from an altitude of at least 1,000 feet, but Air Fest was prepared with a helicopter to take a picture of the code from that height in order to allow others to scan it.

Locate The QR Codes And Win $40,000

Posted onFebruary 28, 2012

From the site:

“Welcome to DARPA’s CLIQR Quest Challenge!

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is conducting the DARPA CLIQR Quest (Cash for Locating and Identifying Quick Response codes (CLIQR)Quest), a prize-based challenge that seeks to advance the understanding of social media and the Internet, and explore the role the Internet and social networking plays in the timely communication, wide area team-building and urgent mobilization required to solve broad scope, time-critical problems.

In time of crises, we must ensure that the right resources make it to the right area in the right time. Delays in finding those resources cost more than time and money, delays cost lives. Finding the most efficient method of resource identification and delivery is paramount. It is a capability with clear relevance and importance to the military when it is called upon for assistance and existing data sources and social network analysis are not sufficient for accomplishing this task.

The CLIQR Quest has been crafted to simulate public mobilization for the identification of essential assets to assist in mobilizing and delivering aid efficiently. The event, like an actual crisis or disaster, is unannounced prior to the start date. The humanitarian crisis relief assets (e.g. water, food, gas, etc.) needed to quickly respond to a disaster are represented by appropriately named – Quick Response (QR) codes. QR codes have been distributed throughout the continental United States to represent the dispersion of resource concentrations throughout the country. CLIQR Quest participants will be challenged to locate other participants who have key assets that are represented by the QR codes. The event will only last for two weeks – the notional assets must be identified and coordinated quickly to ensure they make it to those in need.

The CLIQR Quest begins at 11:00 AM (EST) on Thursday, February 23, 2012 and ends at 12:00 PM (EST) on Thursday, March 8, 2012. Entries are accepted until noon, 12:00 PM (EST) on Thursday, March 8, 2012.

A cash prize of up to US $40,000 cash prize will be awarded to the first contest entrant to find and submit all of the available QR codes.

The winner will be announced and some results will be posted on the CLIQR Quest website during the week of March 12, 2012.”

Posted onFebruary 27, 2012

Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest has begun distributing 55,000 condoms to college students with QR codes®, allowing students to anonymously “check in” and boast about where they’ve practiced safe sex. A Web site dubbed WhereDidYouWearIt.com chronicles all of the action, so you can see that folks are particularly frisky in Ballard or Bellevue or Bellingham.

“Did you just use a condom to protect yourself against unintended pregnancy, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections? You go, tiger! Sex that (is) safe, should be shared,” declares the Web site.

Campuses receiving QR coded condoms include:

Centralia College
Edmonds Community College
Everett Community College
Green River Community College
Highline Community College
Pacific Lutheran University
Pierce College – Puyallup
Tacoma Community College
The Evergreen State College
University of Puget Sound

I think they got this idea from the Swedish QR Code Condoms promotion, check out their VIDEO! I don’t think they used the same app? Using the Swedish app they had much more precise results and probably more fun.

Mashable.com added a video about the QR Code Condom promotion on March 3; http://mashable.com/2012/03/02/qr-code-condoms/

Sportsgirl, one of Australia’s well known fashion labels has launched a ‘QR Code® window shop,’ that allows customers to purchase products without entering a bricks and mortar store. This latest concept works by the use of the Sportsgirl QR code system. Interesting concept, is this the future of retail?
